Store-Bought vs. Custom Orthotics: What’s the Difference?
If you’ve ever browsed the foot care aisle at your local pharmacy, you’ve likely seen a variety of over-the-counter (OTC) insoles promising pain relief and support. While these can offer temporary comfort, they’re not the same as custom orthotics made by a Chiropodist. So, what’s the difference — and which is right for you?
What Are Custom Orthotics?
Custom orthotics are medical-grade devices made specifically for your feet, based on a detailed biomechanical assessment and 3D scan or cast. At Collective Footcare & Orthotics, we use advanced technology — including 3D printing — to design orthotics that match the unique shape of your foot and the way you walk.
Best for: Ongoing foot, heel, knee, or lower back pain; conditions like plantar fasciitis, flat feet, arthritis, bunions, callus and corns, diabetic foot complications, and more.

What Are Store-Bought Orthotics?
Store-bought orthotics (also called insoles or arch supports) are pre-made shoe inserts. They’re typically made from foam, gel, or plastic and come in standard sizes. While they can provide basic cushioning or arch support, they are designed to fit everyone — which means they don’t precisely fit anyone.
Best for: Minor discomfort, short-term use, or adding a bit of extra cushioning in shoes.
Why Custom Orthotics Are Worth the Investment
Foot pain isn’t just uncomfortable — it can affect your ability to stay active, work, and enjoy life. Custom orthotics help correct alignment, redistribute pressure, and reduce strain across your feet and joints. Over time, this can mean:
• Fewer injuries
• Better posture and balance
• Less fatigue
• Improved performance in daily life or sports
How We Create Custom Orthotics
At our clinic, the process starts with a full biomechanical exam and gait analysis. Our Chiropodists consider your unique foot posture, function, and pattern of pain when prescribing your custom orthotic. We then capture a 3D scan of your feet to design a fully customized orthotic using precision technology — including our in-house 3D printer.
Because they’re made on-site, our turnaround is faster, and we can make adjustments easily to ensure your comfort.
Not Sure What You Need?
If you’re unsure whether custom orthotics are right for you, book a consultation. We’ll assess your foot health, identify the cause of your discomfort, and help you decide the best course of action.
